Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
(Matthew 7:24 (NIV))

It is important to have a firm foundation!

If you don’t believe this, try standing on a slippery floor in your socks, or try standing on an icy hill.

Stability is important in all aspects of life, both physical and spiritual. Everything that we do must have a firm foundation or it crumbles and falls out from underneath us. Too many of us look at the physical world and focus on our financial stability, yet we fail to even consider out faith as something that requires a firm foundation. We profess a faith in Jesus, yet we don’t act like it. When the least bit of trouble occurs, we start looking at our resources to figure out what to do. We look at our finances. We look at our jobs. We look at our health, but we never look to Jesus when He should be the foundation of all the things that we do.

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
(Hebrews 11:1 (NIV))

What we turn to shows where we have placed our confidence. It shows where we have placed our hope. It shows where we have placed our assurance.

Think about that in relationship to the foundation of your house. Unless you were involved in the actual construction of your home, you have never seen its foundation. Yet, you trust that it will hold up your house. You have placed your confidence, your hope and your assurance on something that you have never seen. We trust the physical even when we cannot see what is there, so why do we not trust the spiritual when we also cannot see what is there? We have faith in the people who built our homes, yet we fail to have even that much faith in the One who gave us life, who gave us grace, who gave us mercy. When you don’t look to Jesus’ words and when you don’t put them into practice, you are standing on the slippery floor. You are standing on an icy hill. You are unstable in the very foundations of your life.

If you are reading this, you have probably professed a faith in Jesus, but do you truly live your life firmly rooted in His firm foundation?

Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.
(Acts 5:42 (NIV))

They never stopped!

Not only that, they didn’t just proclaim Jesus to each other by giving their testimonies to their own group. They didn’t hide themselves away behind four walls. They did it publicly. They went house to house. They had something that they wanted, that they needed to share with all who would listen. They took Jesus to the people!

They were fulfilling the command that Jesus left with His disciples.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
(Matthew 28:19-20a (NIV))

They didn’t stop there, for they knew that the rest of this passage provided the power and authority to carry out what Jesus had commanded.

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
(Matthew 28:20b (NIV))

They never stopped because they fully understood that Jesus was always with them!

Have we become timid in our faith? Are we too afraid of what others will think if we proclaim Jesus to all whom we see? Have we forgotten that we have been given a command to share the Gospel and that Jesus will be with us, leading us and guiding us every step of the way?

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
(Romans 8:31 (NIV))

If we have all of these assurances, why do so many of us fail to get to the point where we are looked upon as never stopping? With this in mind, I have one last question.

Why doesn’t this happen when we pray?

Why doesn’t this happen when we pray?

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
(Acts 4:31 (NIV))

What an amazing manifestation of His power and His glory!

I don’t know about you, but I long for His power and His glory to be released like this in our churches today!

Can you imagine the outpouring of bold preaching that would come about as a result of this happening? Sadly, I believe that we are missing something that the early church had. I honestly believe that we don’t have the commitment, the desire, and the understanding of exactly what we have been given through the life, death, burial, resurrection and ascension of Jesus. The early church knew what had happened, for they either had experienced it first hand, they had seen it and were drawn to Jesus, or they knew someone who had. The amazing events were still fresh in their minds. They were still fresh in their hearts. All of their lives they had been educated in His Word and they were earnestly seeking what His Word promised. They were filled with the Holy Spirit because they had the faith to know and to trust what they had been taught and what they had seen.

They weren’t caught up in programs, an order of worship, or man made routines that didn’t bring them to the foot of the cross. When they prayed, they prayed. I think that it is safe to say that their prayers were not a five minute or less event. Their prayers were probably prayers of repentance. Their prayers were probably confessions. Their prayers were probably an emptying of themselves where they laid everything at the foot of the cross, and they expected things to happen. Based on this passage from Acts, things did happen. It would not surprise me in the least if what was recorded by James is a result of how they prayed.

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
(James 5:16 (NIV))

Do we want these types of outpourings to happen in our churches? Do we earnestly desire His power and His glory to be made manifest in this world? We need to return to the basics of our faith. We need to recognize His power and His glory when we gather and not simply follow man made rituals. We need to confess, repent and surrender it all at the foot of the cross.

AND, . . .

We don’t need to leave until we are broken and ready to be made anew through His saving grace.

If you desire for the events that happened when the early church prayed, we must ask ourselves this one question, and we must not be afraid of the answer.

Why doesn’t this happen when we pray?

Do you recognize His Lordship?

Do you recognize His Lordship?

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
     the world, and all who live in it;
(Psalms 24:1 (NIV))

What do you see when you take a look at everything that is going on in this world?

Contrary to what society claims, we are not in control. Contrary to what our politicians claim, they are not in control. Contrary to what the media thinks, they are not in control. Contrary to what the 1% believe, they are not in control. Contrary to what the enemy believes, he is not in control.

God is still sovereign!

It may seem as if things are falling apart, but in all honesty, they are actually falling perfectly into place to fulfill God’s plans as foretold by the prophets. Our only part in this is to decide which side we choose to be on. We can continue to live in our sin and suffer the consequences.

For the wages of sin is death,
(Romans 12:23a (NIV))

Or we can choose to repent and give our lives to the Lord.

but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 12:23b (NIV))

The choice is ours and ours alone. Being raised in church doesn’t do it. Being a good person doesn’t do it. Being the child of a believer doesn’t do it. Each person must make the decision for themselves. Each person must decide just who they belong to.

Who do you belong to?

Do you recognize His Lordship?

What can you do to share the Gospel?

What can you do to share the Gospel?

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.
(Romans 1:16 (NIV))

Have you ever truly stopped to reflect on just how powerful words can be?

Words can bring encouragement. They can destroy. Words can bring great joy or great sadness. Words can do tremendous good or bring tremendous harm.

There is one Word that brings eternal life.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
(John 1:1 (NIV))

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
(John 1:14 (NIV))

Consider the language that you speak. How many different words do you know? Do any of them carry the power to bring salvation? Only Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, can bring such a promise.

Every day, we speak hundreds, if not thousands of words. We must choose carefully what we say. We must speak the truth of the Word of God so that others may be brought to salvation, for only the Word can save.

Think about how powerful the Word of God has been in your life.

What can you do to spread the Word?

What can you do to share the Gospel?

How will you explain the reason for your faith?

How will you explain the reason for your faith?

Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage – with great patience and careful instruction.
(2 Timothy 4:2 (NIV))

We are to always be prepared to preach the Word. There is a saying, “At all times preach the Gospel, if you have to, use words.” Actions speak louder than words. Speak through your actions, but be prepared to give testimony as to the reason you do what you do.

God has given us a tremendous gift. A gift that He wants to share with the whole world. Jesus spent three years preaching and teaching about that gift, and then He paid the ultimate price so that the gift could be bestowed. It is a gift that is to be shared. Do not keep it to yourselves. Give it to anyone and everyone who will hear it.

Remember that many people are influenced by actions. Be an example to them of what God’s great mercy and love has done for you, and then be prepared to share it with them in words as well as actions.

How will you explain the reason for your faith?

How well do you love?

How well do you love?

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.
(1 John 4:18 (NAS))

It has been said that there is a thin line between fear and hate. If you fear others, then it is because you are close to hating others. This is probably not intentional, but, it is true.

It is through love that hatred is abolished, and through this, fear is abated. You cannot fear someone that you love. They are opposite extremes and diametrically opposed to each other. You either love with no fear, or you fear with hatred as the root.

We are to live with Jesus as the example. Jesus did not know fear or hatred. He had compassion and mercy on all that He encountered. It was their reactions to Him that set the tone of the interactions. No matter what happened, Jesus always responded in love and mercy. If we are to be followers of Jesus, then we, too, should respond to all whom we see with love and mercy. Jesus gave us instructions on what to do.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
(John 13:34-35)

How well have you carried out this new commandment? Can others tell that you are a disciple of Jesus?

How well do you love?

Are you being equipped or are you being held back?

Are you being equipped or are you being held back?

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
(Ephesians 4:11-12 (NIV))

The church is not a top-heavy, professional leadership only organization!

Too many people look at the church and think that it is the job of the professional pastors to evangelize others. Sadly, too many professional pastors believe that they are to do it all, and then they get jealous or mad when those whom they are supposed to equip do more than they do. This is not Christlike!

Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
(John 14:12 (NIV))

Jesus did not put any disclaimers on who this applies to. He simply said “whoever believes in me!”

Do you believe in Jesus?

In addition, too many people look at the church as a place that they go to once a week and simply put in their time. Other people think that it is the job of the professional pastors to tell them what to do. With all of this in play, too many people never get beyond this simple infancy stage of their faith where they constantly rely on others for what they should know.

They never mature beyond spiritual milk!

In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
(Hebrews 5:12-14 (NIV))

It is time that we, as the Body of Christ, do what we are called to do. We don’t know the days that we have left. We don’t know the days that others have left. We don’t know when the Lord will return for His church. We don’t need to continue in our usual manner. We need to be equipped to reach those who need Jesus.

Are you being equipped or are you being held back?

Choose only one thing, and His name is Jesus!

Choose only one thing, and His name is Jesus!

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
(Luke 10:41-42 (NIV))

With all that is going on in the world, have you chosen what is better?

It is human nature to worry. Each of us does it whether we like to admit it, and each of us has a nervous habit that we do when we worry. It appears that Martha was worried about what people, about what Jesus, would think of her if she didn’t fulfill her role as host. She was worried about how society would perceive her. It appears that her nervous habit was an extension of what she worried about. It was a frantically paced attempt to make sure that everything was in order. I honestly believe that she possessed the personality trait where she would be the one to clean the house before the maid arrived. I am sure that you know someone like that. They worry about the least little detail because they think that others will pay attention to these little details. They are afraid of being judged, and as a result, they place anything and everything as a priority and completely ignore what is really important.

They simply cannot let go!

Are you able to let go?

Is there anything in your life that you worry about? Is there anything in your life that you need to let go of? Are you worried about the state of the world? Is that what you need to let go of?

As believers in Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, there is one thing that we must remember. There is one thing that we need to cling to instead of worrying about the things that we cannot do anything about. We need to remember that Jesus has overcome the world!

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
(John 16:33 (NIV))

If we have placed our faith in Jesus, and we have learned to fully rely on the fact that Jesus has overcome the world, why would we worry about anything? Why do we allow the things of this world to upset us if we know that we are being held in the loving arms of the Lord? Why do we attempt to clean up before the proverbial maid arrives?

We have made a choice when we choose to follow Jesus. We also have a choice just like Martha and Mary each day of our lives after we choose to follow Jesus. We know that both women loved Jesus, but Martha still chose to worry. She chose the busyness of the world when the giver of ultimate peace was right in front of her. We must choose to not be like Martha! We must choose wisely.

Choose only one thing, and His name is Jesus!

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
(Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV))

Discipleship is relational. Spreading the Gospel is relational. Loving people is relational.

Neither Jesus nor His disciples developed programs that took the place of true and loving relationships with people. Why do so many churches today push programs over relationships when they are trying to lead people to Jesus? We have men’s programs. We have women’s programs. We have college, youth and children’s programs, but do we truly have Jesus?

We have lead pastors, administrative pastors, youth pastors, senior adult pastors, children’s pastors and worship pastors, but when the focus is the organization instead of people, we lose Jesus. We become like the very Pharisees that Jesus called a brood of vipers.

Please don’t misunderstand what I am saying.

If done correctly, these programs can become great ministry outreaches, but if we lose sight of how Jesus loved people, then all of the programs in the world won’t amount to a hill of beans.

When we stand before the Lord, He is not going to ask you how many programs that you participated in. He will ask you how well you did at sharing the Gospel. He will ask you how well you used the talents that He gave you. He will ask you these questions even though He already knows the answers. He will ask then just as He is asking now, and as He has always asked. He wants each of us to examine our own hearts, our own lives, in the light of the only thing that matters. Did you love the Lord as He loves you and have you loved others as He loves them?

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
(Matthew 22:37-40 (NIV))

This is what we are called to do.

We don’t need another program.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
(‭‭‭John‬ ‭14‬‬:‭6‬ (‭NIV‬‬))

We need Jesus!
