“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
(Luke 10:41-42 (NIV))

With all that is going on in the world, have you chosen what is better?

It is human nature to worry. Each of us does it whether we like to admit it, and each of us has a nervous habit that we do when we worry. It appears that Martha was worried about what people, about what Jesus, would think of her if she didn’t fulfill her role as host. She was worried about how society would perceive her. It appears that her nervous habit was an extension of what she worried about. It was a frantically paced attempt to make sure that everything was in order. I honestly believe that she possessed the personality trait where she would be the one to clean the house before the maid arrived. I am sure that you know someone like that. They worry about the least little detail because they think that others will pay attention to these little details. They are afraid of being judged, and as a result, they place anything and everything as a priority and completely ignore what is really important.

They simply cannot let go!

Are you able to let go?

Is there anything in your life that you worry about? Is there anything in your life that you need to let go of? Are you worried about the state of the world? Is that what you need to let go of?

As believers in Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, there is one thing that we must remember. There is one thing that we need to cling to instead of worrying about the things that we cannot do anything about. We need to remember that Jesus has overcome the world!

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
(John 16:33 (NIV))

If we have placed our faith in Jesus, and we have learned to fully rely on the fact that Jesus has overcome the world, why would we worry about anything? Why do we allow the things of this world to upset us if we know that we are being held in the loving arms of the Lord? Why do we attempt to clean up before the proverbial maid arrives?

We have made a choice when we choose to follow Jesus. We also have a choice just like Martha and Mary each day of our lives after we choose to follow Jesus. We know that both women loved Jesus, but Martha still chose to worry. She chose the busyness of the world when the giver of ultimate peace was right in front of her. We must choose to not be like Martha! We must choose wisely.

Choose only one thing, and His name is Jesus!

Do you believe it could happen at any moment?

in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
(1 Corinthians 15:52 (NIV))

Do you believe in the Rapture in which the true believers are suddenly caught up and taken away from this world and are instantly with the Lord?

I honestly don’t want to get into a debate about whether this concept is true or not. I simply want to pose a few questions to you.

Do you find this world to be a place of ever increasing evil where sin is considered good and anything godly and righteous is considered evil?

Do you long for the Lord to return and initiate a complete reset?

Do you long to be with the Lord?

Would you be upset if you were removed from this sinful, evil world and caught up to be with the Lord in heaven?

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
(1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (NIV))

Think about your answers and then think about this statement. The Lord is only going to come for those who long, who believe that they will see Him. I saw something from Maurice Sklar that really drives this point home. In it, he said of the Lord, “Those that do believe I am coming for them and those who do not are both correct.”

If you aren’t waiting, believing and expecting His return, can you honestly say that you truly belong to Jesus? Think about that from an earthly perspective. If you are separated from someone you truly love, what are your days like? Do you long to see them with all of your heart? Do you pray for their soon return? Do you hope and expect to see them at any minute? Are you disappointed when you don’t see them? This is how we should be with our love of the Lord Jesus! We should long to be with Him and, based on His promises, we should expect to see Him in the twinkling of an eye!

If we truly love the Lord, we should be expecting His return. We should be living for this event! Are you someone who believes that He is coming? Are you ready?

When was the last time that you were still?

Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when men succeed in their ways,
when they carry out their wicked schemes.
(Psalms 37:7 (NIV))

How many times have you found yourself wanting to do what God would have you do, only to have your “apple cart” upset by someone who is doing the worldly thing? I know that it happens far too often for my tastes. It is hard to keep the world from creeping in when this happens. We must do as the Psalmist told us. We must be still and wait on God. God has an eternal time clock and an eternal plan for not only us, but for the whole world and everyone in it. We must wait on God for what He is working in our lives. If we diligently seek Him, He will fill us to overflowing with the gifts that He would have us possess. We must also keep still and patient when it concerns the wicked schemes of others.

Often, people have come to know Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior only after they have succeeded in all worldly matters. Sometimes they achieve everything that they wanted from the world and still find an emptiness that they cannot fill. Sometimes, the world turns on them and they hit rock bottom and then they turn upward to receive Jesus. Either way, God was patient with them. He was still and waited until the time was right for these people to be reached. We must not look on these people and envy them for their worldly gain. We must pray for them and wait on God to work in their lives. Who knows? Maybe these people that are succeeding in their wicked ways will someday need to turn to God, and God has kept you waiting so that you could be the vessel that He uses to touch them. We must also remember that God created each of us as unique individuals and that He does not have two identical life plans or plans for salvation.

Be still. Listen to God. Is He telling you to watch and pray for those around you? God speaks in different ways to different people. He is that still, small voice. He does not force Himself on anyone, but He is eager to speak to those who will be still and listen.
