Be Still . . .
Devotionals for Daily Living ©
Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done.
(Romans 1:28 (NLT))
Some translations use words that just don’t seem to be understood in the way that they are intended, or perhaps they use words that they think fit best because there isn’t a direct way to translate from the Hebrew or the Greek. That is why I like to reference many different translations. This particular passage is a prime example of this.
Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.
(Romans 1:28 (NIV))
Which is easier to fully understand and grasp exactly what God has done?
He gave them over to a depraved mind, or He abandoned them to their foolish thinking.
I realize that they both convey God’s judgment, but different words can incite different responses, even when they are saying the same thing.
“God gave them over” indicates that He has allowed this to happen. It implies that this has been allowed since the beginning. I realize that we have free will. I realize that God does allow us to use our free will, but He is constantly calling us to repent and return to Him. At what point does He stop calling? At what point does He abandon those who have abandoned Him?
“he abandoned them” indicates that He has seen their actions and has turned His back on them because they have turned their backs completely on Him. It is at this point that He gives them exactly what they want.
I am sure that it breaks His heart, but I firmly believe that there is a point at which God will allow us to have our own way. It is at this point that He abandons us to our foolish thinking, to our depraved minds. I honestly believe that this country has already reached this point. To be honest with you, I believe that most of the world has already reached this point. All that awaits now is His judgment on the world.
If you profess a faith in Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, you need to rely on His truth and acknowledge that He is Lord. We must remember that the word “lord” indicates that we completely submit to His authority and His will. It does not simply mean that we can call upon Him to save us and then go about our sinful, foolish thinking as if nothing had changed.
We are to change!
Perhaps I should say that we are to repent and allow Him to change us from the inside out!
Instead of being abandoned by God, we must desire to abandon our foolish thinking and fully embrace the grace and mercy freely given through the cross. We must not be foolish and truly acknowledge God. We must retain the knowledge of God so that we know what we should do.
It is our choice to make now!
We can abandon our sin or be abandoned by God!
