What do you hold firmly to?

Be Still . . .
Devotionals for Daily Living

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.
(Hebrews 4:14 (NIV))

Do you hold firmly to your faith?

I want you to give me, actually, I want you to give yourself, an honest answer to the following questions.

What do you do when money is tight and your car breaks down?

What do you do when you get fired from your job?

What do you do when you are faced with a life changing illness?

I could ask countless questions like these, but I hope that these are sufficient to get the idea across. The idea is that how we react to these types of situations is a direct reflection of our faith. We can either panic in our human nature or we can turn to Jesus in our need. We can choose to forget what Jesus has promised or we can fully embrace what Jesus has promised. We can abandon what faith we profess to possess or we can fully embrace the faith that Jesus calls us to possess.

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
(John 16:33 (NIV))

Do you have faith that Jesus has overcome the world?

Do you live your life reflecting what you profess to believe or do you reflect the world and it’s troubles? We have a choice. We can hold firmly to the world or we can hold firmly to faith in Jesus!

What do you hold firmly to?

Do you set yourself apart from the world?

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
(1 Peter 2:9 (NIV))

If you claim to be a part of the Body of Christ, you have been chosen. You have been set apart from the rest of the world to be different than the world. You have been set apart to be a witness to the world for the Gospel. You have been set apart to show the world how God intended for us to live.

Are you a witness to the world?

Do you reflect the life and light of Jesus in all that you do?

Sadly, too many people today have allowed the world to influence them in their lives. Instead of showing the world how we should live, we have a tendancy to reflect the world instead of reflecting the light of Jesus to the world.

When a group of people are basically being bullies to someone, whether at work or at school, do you go along with them or do you set yourself apart? Do you intercede?

When a group of people that you know want to do something that you know you shouldn’t do, do you do it anyway, or do you set yourself apart?

When your friends deny Jesus and curse God, do you make up excuses for them and go along with what they do, or do you set yourself apart?

The Body of Christ is called to a higher standard. We are to be the light.

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
(Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV))

We are called to be set apart!
