Is this how you know the Lord?

But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.
(Psalms 88:15 (NIV))

Everyone in the world has an image of how they see God!

Some see an angry old man. Some see a vindictive character. Others see someone who just doesn’t care about us, while others see Him as someone who takes great joy in each of us. Even atheists, who claim that He doesn’t exist, have a mental image of Him, or should I say the absence of Him, for it takes a very vivid imagination to claim that He doesn’t exist.

What is your image of God?

Is you image of God distorted by the characteristics that your earthly father displayed?

Do you find it difficult to believe that someone who created everything that exists knows you intimately? We are told that He does!

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
(Psalm 139:13-14 (NIV))

When you think of God, do you see Him in this manner?

Is this how you know the Lord?

Can you imagine all that God has for those who love Him?

However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him—
(1 Corinthians 2:9 (NIV))

How good is your imagination?

If you are like me, you can probably imagine some pretty wonderful things. I like to imagine my wife and I on board a long cruise where we are privileged to see some of the most beautiful sights that God has created in this world. I often find myself wondering and imagining what heaven will be like. I often imagine what it will be like to see Jesus face to face for the very first time! I often imagine what it will feel like to bask in the glory of God for all of eternity.

What do you imagine?

Do you have a clear mental image in mind?

I know that what I am about to say may sound condescending, but whatever we, as humanity, are capable of bringing to life in our imaginations is nothing more than the filthy rags that we are.

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
(Isaiah 64:6 (NIV))

Think about that concept!

Think about the sinful, fallen nature of humanity. How can we, who have never seen the glory of God, imagine something that even comes close to the reality of all that God has promised to those who love Him? Think about it in terms that you can relate to. What is the one thing in this world that, to you, is so utterly amazing that you simply cannot find words to describe it? Do you have it in mind? What type of feeling does this invoke? What would be your reaction if this feeling were triggered by every single thing that you ever saw? Can you even begin to fathom the joy that you would feel?

I am so glad that God blesses us with imaginations. Our imaginations give us small glimpses into what we will actually see when we are in His presence. Until then, we can get excited with our limited understanding and rest assured in the knowledge that reality will be so much better!

He knows my name!

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me– just as the Father knows me and I know the Father–and I lay down my life for the sheep.
(John 10:14-15 (NIV))

What do you think of when you think of a shepherd?

Do you have visions of a poorly educated person who is rough and not pleasant to be around? Do you think of someone who cares little about their life and is relegated to tending to the smelly sheep?

Sadly, our mental image of a shepherd is something that is not one hundred percent accurate. In this profession, just like in every profession, there are those who are excellent and then there are those who are not so great. When you think of a good shepherd, that narrows the range. A good shepherd cares about the flock. He knows each one individually and He knows how each one will act. He is capable of calling each one by name.

Jesus is that good shepherd!

He knows my name!

What I find even more astounding is that He knows the name of every single person throughout history who has called upon Him as their personal Lord and Savior.

I don’t know about you, but I have problems calling my children by the right name sometimes.

Jesus will never call us by the wrong name. He knows us intimately and He loves each of us intimately.

Does Jesus know your name?
