Be Still . . .

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
(Hebrews 11:6 (NIV))
I’ve read this particular passage many times and I thought that I understood it, but recently I had an epiphany. I had a new understanding of this passage and I don’t understand why the obvious had not made itself known to me before. It all starts with a fresh understanding of faith.
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
(Hebrews 11:1 (NIV))
Have you ever seen God? Are you confident that He exists? If you firmly believe that He exists, that is faith. In this physical world, it takes faith to even acknowledge that God exists. If you do not possess faith the size of a mustard seed, then it is impossible for your mind to even conceive of the idea of God. Faith is the key! Without faith, God doesn’t exist in your heart or in your mind. You have made a decision to shun the Creator of all things! That breaks the very heart of God, for He longs to draw each of us closer to Himself. It only takes a little faith to grow the idea that God is real. Once you have the faith to make this proclamation, you have taken the first step in your journey with the Lord. Each step of that journey draws you closer to the Lord and builds a stronger faith. It pleases the Lord when you draw closer to Him. It pleases the Lord as your faith matures.
How do you grow faith?
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
(Romans 10:17 (NKJV))
We must spend time daily in His Word, for His Word is His heart! When we know His Word, we know Him intimately.
Do you possess a faith that seeks intimacy with the Lord?
It takes faith to turn to God and that pleases Him!

I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
(John 14:12 (NIV))
Do you believe that you can do what Jesus did?
I know that I have a difficult time believing that a sinner like me could do the same things that the Son of God was capable of doing when He walked upon this earth.
Even though I find it difficult to believe, I must accept it as the truth, for I believe that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God. God, by His very nature cannot sin by stating something that is not true.
Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.
(John 5:19 (NIV))
If Jesus cannot tell a lie, then by the very words that He spoke, we must believe that they are true. Each of us has the capability of doing what Jesus did if we simply have faith in Him.
Faith.
That is the key.
He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, `Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. “
(Matthew 17:20 (NIV))
If we have faith, we will do what Jesus did. It only takes a little faith, because faith, like the little mustard seed, will grow into something majestic in stature if we only allow it to take root.
Picture yourself doing the things that Jesus did.
Do you have the faith to stand firm in that promise?

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
(Isaiah 7:14 (NIV))
Do you believe in the virgin birth?
There are so many things that depend upon your answer to this not so simple question. Among those are key principles that influence your current life and your eternity. Was Jesus the fulfillment of this prophecy from Isaiah? Is Jesus the Son of God born of a woman? Does God have the ability to intervene in and through the created natural order of things? Did God have the birth of Jesus planned? Did God know exactly what would happen and does He know exactly what will happen in the future?
I suppose that it all comes down to one simple question.
Who do you say that Jesus is?
Everything in all of eternity comes down to your specific answers to this question, and to the previous ones.
There is one time of year when we focus on the birth of Jesus, but recently, society seems to have done their best to trivialize the most important birth that has ever occurred. It has become commercialized. It has become about giving gifts. Certain aspects of our society has even tried to completely remove the true reason for the season. At this Christmas, I have to ask one question once again. Your answer determines what you celebrate and why you celebrate. Your answer determines your eternal existence.
Do you believe in the virgin birth?

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
(John 3:16 (NIV))
All too often we focus on God’s love for us, and rightly so, for without this great love we would not have the option to believe!
Belief!
Belief is such a powerful thing. What we possess within our hearts, minds and souls is the key to our eternity. It isn’t enough that God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son. On a personal level, that means nothing unless you believe it to be true. Think of it like this. I possess a great gift of vast worth and I want to share it. I tell you that I have something that will change your life. Unless you believe that I speak the truth and you accept that gift, it does nothing for you. God’s great love for us is the same. If we don’t believe that what is spoken and written is true and if we don’t accept it as our own, it does nothing for us.
My wife is probably like many people with respect to one trait that she has. She will bring things home from a store simply because they are free. She believes that there will be a use for whatever she brings home. Me, I only bring things home if I need them, but what if I’m wrong? What if I turn down a magnificently free gift because I don’t think that I need it? What if I had turned down God’s free gift because I didn’t believe that I needed it?
Do you believe that God loves the world?
Do you believe that God gave his one and only Son for us so that we could have eternal life?
Do you believe in Jesus?
Do you believe?

And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 4:7 (NAS))
No matter what you may face in this life, there is one constant that you can always count on. This constant can provide a peace of mind when all around you is falling apart.
What can possibly give you peace when everything is going to the dogs?
The assurance that God is in control, and that salvation is yours through Jesus Christ, His only Son.
Do you have a peace about you at all times? Do you honestly want that peace? It is yours for the asking. Simply admit that you are a sinner and ask Jesus into your heart.
Some people experience the peace quicker than others, however, it is attainable. Focus on Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, and the rest will come. The key word is to FOCUS! Do not take your eyes off of Him, for it is through His redemptive blood that we are saved and given this peace.
Does the peace of God guard your heart and mind?

Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? The sower sows the word. And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown; when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word which is sown in them. And these in like manner are the ones sown upon rocky ground, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy; and they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. And others are the ones sown among thorns; they are those who hear the word, but the cares of the world, and the delight in riches, and the desire for other things, enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. But those that were sown upon the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.
(Mark 4:13-20 (RSV))
Understanding is the key to everything!
Perhaps it is even the equivalent of where the seed falls.
Our understanding of God’s Word is crucial to how we react to it, how it impacts our lives, and more importantly, how we use it to impact the lives of those around us.
If our hearts are fertile soil for the seed of God’s Word, then our lives will bear fruit and we will be a part of the harvest. If our hearts are like rocky ground, we will listen to God’s Word, but fall away when things get rough. We will not be able to rely on our deep roots of faith, for these roots will have been shut out by the rocks in our lives.
We need to be able to bear fruit. In order to do so, we must have understanding. This understanding is not as the world calls understanding. The world sees understanding as education and acceptance of alternate “truths.”
Godly understanding is based on faith.
It requires faith to allow the seed of God’s Word to take root in our lives. It requires faith to allow it to mature and grow. It takes faith to allow it to bear fruit.
Faith is understanding. Understanding is faith.
Place your faith in Jesus as God’s Word made flesh.
